“What Vitamins Should I Take”?

I get that question all the time when it comes to it taking vitamin C for gout the thing to do.

What is always completely frustrating to me about the vitamin conversation is that people take vitamin C for gout with a “prescription drug” mindset…”I took my vitamin C now let’s go get a Big Mac.”

(shake my head)

The pharmaceutical industry has made us more stupid and sick that ever – all the more reason you should be taking your vitamin C for gout!

But let’s get to it – we’re going to have us a big long conversation about vitamins being part of your gout diet, but let’s get it out of way – vitamin C is the first one you need to be getting religious about taking, to kick gout’s ass.

Why Vitamin C for Gout?

There are the usual studies about vitamin C that have all been paid for by some deep pockets out there to make you think what they want you to think. They say it helps in metabolizing proteins, healing wounds, and helps produce collagen. You may have also heard that it helps to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease, prevent colds, and even help to treat cancer and cataracts.

There is also information out there about how 500mgs of vitamin C a day may help to lower uric acid. It is also believed that this could lower the risk of gout and help to prevent it. Here’s my advice; take a 1000mgs a day just in case…that’s what I do.

But here’s my question to you? Do you really care what all the those studies say? I mean, there are studies out there saying you shouldn’t drink, smoke, or eat fast food but do you still do all that? Exactly. So here’s the deal; if you don’t stop trashing your body with all that hard living, it’s not going to make a rats A$$ bit of difference if you take some vitamin C for your gout every once in a while.

Of course it’s at this point I have to go into my usual rap and tell you that you need to:

  • be breathing really well and utilizing the oxygen you take in, and
  • staying properly hydrated with good water, and
  • eating REAL food that you buy in the produce section and cook yourself.

Beyond that, you’ve got to slow down…comprende? If you do all that, then maybe we can talk about why it’s good to take vitamin C for gout. And it’s not just vitamin C.

The World of Vitamins…

I hope I’ve been able to get through to you how erroneous it is to be thinking about trashing your body and then taking vitamins to save your ass. It just makes no sense. HOWEVER, I should also say that if you are going to trash yourself and give yourself gout, taking vitamins is, in a left-handed way, a good idea to keep yourself from ending up completely dick-in-the-dirt.

This whole world of vitamins can get pretty complicated and confusing but we’re going to keep it simple. There are water soluble vitamins, and fat soluble vitamins.

MY tophi when away!!!! It was there for a month, then it started leaking, i pressured it , rub it , and the clear gel came out then a little blood, now it’s gone, my finger looks normal (except for the inflamation it has). In January I changed my diet, no meat, very little chicken, lots of veggies, tofu, fish, and lots of alkaline water, lemons, and of course walking 3 or 4 times a day about 2 miles each, keeping busy yard work, washing my car, being positive, I took combination of Gout, Joint, kidney, liver, multi-vitamins, read alot about gout in your blogs and website, all over, and prayed. My gout is gone, I just have arthitis on my fingers, sometimes my feet hurt when I walk , oh also no BEER, but I still have some now and then. I’m continuing everything I have done above, i’m not changing back to my old ways of eating and ‘couch potato’ ways. Thanks to you for inspiration too!!! I know people with Gout are far worse than I was and it was scary seeing those pics of their feet. PS: I never went to the Dr. and took any kind of Meds. ALSO I bought a ‘grounding mat’ , read about it, it works.~ Ruben

The common water soluble vitamins are the B vitamins and vitamin C. There are a couple of important things to know about the difference between water soluble and fat soluble vitamins.

C vitamins come from various fruits and vegetables like peppers, dark green vegetables, broccoli, strawberries, and citrus fruits. B vitamins can come from both plant and animal sources including different meats and organ meats, some fish and shellfish, some whole grain products, and dark green leafy vegetables like kale.

The water soluble vitamins dissolve in water, and the fat soluble ones dissolve in fat. (duh!)

Here’s the deal; the WS ones get used up quickly and get peed out, and you need to replenish them daily. The FS ones are stored in the liver and fatty tissues, so it’s not quite the same. However, maintaining consistency is still important. In a perfect world, (no McDonald’s or pharmaceutical companies) we would all be eating the perfect combination of clean proteins, fresh vegetables and fruits, and some whole grains. We would be getting everything we needed from our food. But we don’t.

The common fat soluble vitamins are A, K, D, E. These vitamins can come from a number of different sources, both plant and animal as well. Raw, whole milk and cheeses, leafy green vegetables, squashes, apricots, organ meats, eggs, and butter. If you are buying your own food, and preparing and cooking it yourself at home, you may be doing fairly well with these. But be honest with yourself.

Very often in our crazy lives, we are on the go, stressing out, taxing our bodies and brains, and then we settle for whatever we can get at the drive-thru. That has to stop. It’s a matter of getting organized and on track…which is the subject of another post to come.

How Much Should I Take?

Of course you need to do you’re own research but here’s what I do for vitamin C; I buy Emergen-C Lite. It comes in 1000mg packets. It’s portable and convenient. It may not be the highest quality and if I decide to change my mind about it, I’ll let you know. For B vitamins, I take a B-50 Complex . . . get cozy with your local health food store and get educated.

As far as the fat soluble vitamins go, we get fresh, raw, whole milk and we buy really expensive organic butter. Also about once a week we eat some kind of grass-fed beef. The fat in grass-fed beef is high in omega-3 fatty acids…because the cows are eating what they’re supposed to eat – grass – not corn.

In the near future I may be revising this to add in a special fish oil and a special butter oil. There is a lot to the importance of fat soluble vitamins for the optimum absorption of minerals that have everything to do with supporting and nourishing the kidneys. For us gout boys and girls, showing the proper love for our kidneys is really important when it comes to gout right? Cool.

Bert Middleton

“I know your pain. Let me help you kill your gout for good!  And teach you to advocate for yourself and take ownership of your gout recovery, by showing you how to live the gout-free lifestyle.” Two decades ago, Bert Middleton found himself diagnosed with gout. Like 8.3 million other people in the United States (approximately 4% of the population), he struggled helplessly with the physical, emotional, social, and financial impact that gout left unchecked can have on your life. Prescription drugs were of limited help… And the terrible pain of regular gout attacks left him unable to enjoy even the simplest daily pleasures. His marriage was suffering. His finances were spiraling due to the impact gout had on his ability to work. And maintaining a social life was often nearly impossible. Tophi surgeries left him in terrible pain.  And he found himself depressed … and angry … that gout was stealing years of his life.

Until one day, after hundreds of hours of research and self-experimentation, Bert finally had a breakthrough and created a blueprint for a way of living that would prove to be “the answer” to living gout-free for nearly a decade now. Today, Bert and his “Gout Wife” Sharon devote their evenings and weekends to educating other gout sufferers on how to live the gout-free lifestyle. Showing others his 911 Emergency Response Gout Recovery Plan for getting PAINFUL gout attacks under control in as little as 4 hours. And then, how to make daily choices that keep gout under control for GOOD! So you can finally start LIVING again!
